Material guide

Know what you’re bringing home

Every material has a life after you. Here’s how our most common ones behave — and how to retire them responsibly.
Fast-growing grass that needs no pesticides. Toothbrush handles and cutlery compost in a home bin within 4–6 months; remove nylon bristles first with pliers.
Grown across the Bengal delta, jute absorbs carbon quickly and biodegrades in 1–2 years. Hand-wash in cold water and air-dry to keep fibres strong.
Endlessly recyclable and inert — ideal for food. Reuse for years, then return to our counter; we pass them to local recyclers in Tejgaon.
Unglazed clay fired at low temperature. Chipped pots can be crushed and mixed into garden soil to improve drainage.
A by-product of the coconut trade that would otherwise be burned. Scrubbers and bowls compost fully; oil bowls lightly once a month.
Cotton coated in wax, resin and jojoba. Rinse in cool water, refresh in a warm oven after 6 months, compost after about a year.
